We take boating safety very seriously and life jackets are always provided for each person in your party and for all ages and sizes.Ī: No. Absolutely no heavy fishing tackle is allowed on our pontoon boats at any time. Please note that only light fishing tackle fishing is allowed on our pontoon boats. #Shell key shuttle licenseIf you have more than the maximum number of guests in your party please rent an additional boat.Ī: Very small light tackle fishing is allowed but you will need a license which you can obtain by visiting. Parties with more than the maximum number of guests will not be allowed on a single boat. Our premium pontoon boats can fit a maximum of 10 guests including all children. Q: How many people can fit in a pontoon boat?Ī: Our regular pontoon boats can fit a maximum of 10 guests including all children. If you were born after January 1st, 1988 you will need to check in 1 hour early to obtain a boater’s safety card for a $3.00 fee. You must be age 18 or older with a valid US driver’s license in order to rent and operate a boat. Q: Are there any age restrictions to rent a boat? Do I need a license?Ī: Yes. Sometimes our cruises fill up quickly, so it is best to reserve at least one week in advance.Ī: We ask that you arrive a half an hour before your scheduled tour or rental departure time unless you need to obtain a boater’s safety card then 45 min is best(please refer to the FAQ section for the activity you have booked below). Phone reservations must be made at least 2 hours prior to departure. We will call you or email if we need to cancel for weather.Ī: Online bookings may close from 12-48 hours prior to departure, but with availability last minute reservations can be made over the phone and paid for at check-in time. Usually the weather here at Shell Island is nice so just call if you have any doubt. In the event that we have to cancel a tour due to severe weather, you will have the opportunity to reschedule your trip or receive a refund. We walked back down to where the shuttle picked us up.Q: Is there parking available at your location?Ī: Yes! There should be plenty of spaces available in front of our ticket booth, but if not anywhere here at Treasure Island Marina (3605 Thomas drive) is fine it’s all free.Ī: Most of our tours and rentals will go out if there is light rain or other moderate weather conditions. So we sorted through and each picked a couple of the best ones. So I guess to keep the birds and your lunch safe keep all of your stuff with you.īy about 1:00 we realized we had way too many shells to bring home. One of them had taken my first aid kit but dropped it in the sand nearby. When we got back the gulls and crows had unzipped my backpack and were taking off with a sandwich. We walked quite a ways up the beach and back. We were in the water when we saw them so it was pretty cool having them swim all around us! I think that’s the only time I have ever seen a ray in the wild. What looked like a big, black, undulating shape was coming at us and we realized it was a pod of devil rays! There were maybe 15 of them, flipping their wings up out of the water and swimming around each other. I wonder how many of those I have been around in the ocean and never seen before. It was invisible as soon as she put it in the water. She also found this transparent little fish flopping in the sand. I touched the top of it and that was enough for me! Sea slug at Shell Key, Florida I still can’t believe she picked it up and wasn’t queasy about it. We also found lots of clams which we tossed into the water. You aren’t supposed to take them if they don’t have a hole because that means there is still an animal living in it. There are lots and lots of sand dollars but most have been pecked open by gulls. We went shelling and looking for anything interesting. We started walking up the key and finally set our stuff down. The shuttle provides you with a big potato sack for shelling, and you can very easily fill it up. There are no bathrooms or amenities of any kind so you have to pack a lunch, sunscreen, beach towels, cameras, etc. It’s a quick 10 minute boat ride over, then you get off and it’s just you and the island. We took the 10 am shuttle because we wanted to spend all day there. The shuttle picks you up at Pass-a-Grille in St Pete Beach. Finally we decided to take the shuttle over to Shell Key Preserve. ![]() It’s hard to chose between sunset cruises, dolphin cruises, and all the different beaches. There is so much to do on the gulf coast of Florida. ![]()
